Marble Falls softball’s quartet named to all-district team

Four Marble Falls High School softball players were named to the All-District 24-4A teams.

Junior shortstop Kylie Roberts was the lone Lady Mustangs on the first team.

“Every team got to see a different something,” Marble Falls head coach Alex Lozoya said. “Lampasas and Burnet got to see her defense. (Georgetown) Gateway got to see the different side. She helped contribute to our defense. She had a way to get us out of jams. She was making plays.”

Offensively, opponents looked to neutralize her bat, Lozoya said. When Roberts made them pay for pitching to her, she was intentionally walked, the coach pointed out, adding it was to their benefit to ensure the Lady Mustang got only one base as opposed to multiple bases off one hit.

Sophomore third baseman Cheyenne Thompson and freshman shortstop Jocelyn Suarez were named to the second team.

“Cheyenne had good moments offensively with the better pitchers in our district,” Lozoya said. “She was our only player who had multiple hits at Burnet. Against Gateway, she had good at-bats. Coaches made adjustments to pitch to her. A lot of Cheyenne’s recognition came on the offensive side. She was a tough out in our lineup.”

Suarez’s selection was because of her defensive prowess. She also was a dangerous hitter.

“She was making a lot of plays,” Lozoya said. “One coach talked about how quick she was to throw the ball to infielders. She learned and was making the clean plays.”

Sophomore outfielder Marisol Ramos is on the honorable mention list.

“The only time I don’t think she made a play was against Lampasas,” the coach said. “She just didn’t squeeze the ball in her glove. We saw a big improvement in her defense. You want the ball hit in her direction.”

Though only these four were named to the list, Lozoya said coaches acknowledged the Lady Mustangs showed improvement every week.

“Your kids got a lot better,” he recalled being told. “They grew and kept going in the right direction.”
